Muslim-majority Turkey, currently hosting Pope Leo XIV on his first trip abroad as pontiff, is not “a hostile environment” for Christians, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople told AFP during an interview.

Patriarch Bartholomew emphasized that Turkey’s Christian citizens enjoy freedom of worship and coexist peacefully with Muslims, though he noted lingering challenges for minority communities. He described the Pope’s visit as a symbol of dialogue and mutual understanding between different faiths.

“This is not a hostile environment for Christians. We live as neighbors, and dialogue is the only path forward,” Bartholomew said.
