Freedom House FIW 2026 says 54 countries experienced worsening for political rights and civil liberties during 2025. It adds 35 countries had improvements. Just 21% of the world’s population is where countries are rated Free, from 46%. Two decades ago it reached 46 percent. Freedom in the World signals increasing threats and reprisals for political speech created repression effect on speech.
