## India Highlights Maritime Security and Counterterrorism at the UN Security Council
On October 24, 2023, India reaffirmed its strong commitment to promoting maritime security and counterterrorism efforts during an open debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The debate emphasized the importance of safeguarding sea routes, developing global cooperation against non-state maritime threats, and ensuring adherence to international law.
### Focus on Maritime Security
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, noted that maritime security is crucial for global trade and energy supply chains. She highlighted India’s role in advancing regional stability in the Indian Ocean and maintaining freedom of navigation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
> “The oceans are our shared resource, and their safety ensures economic and environmental stability,” said Ambassador Kamboj.
### Counterterrorism Commitment
The Indian envoy also stressed that terrorism remains one of the most serious threats to peace and security. She urged the international community to act decisively against those supporting or financing terrorist organizations and to ensure zero tolerance for terror in any form.
India reiterated its call for comprehensive global cooperation to counter extremism, emphasizing the need to strengthen UN mechanisms and improve intelligence sharing among member states.
### Regional and Global Collaboration
Ambassador Kamboj referenced India’s initiatives like the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative and its active involvement in various UN peacekeeping and security frameworks. These efforts, she said, reflect India’s belief in “an open, stable, and rules-based maritime order.”
India also underlined the role of technology and information-sharing systems in monitoring illegal fishing, piracy, trafficking, and maritime terrorism. The country continues to work with partners in the Indian Ocean region and beyond to enhance maritime domain awareness.
