A senior councillor has sharply criticized the recent improvements made by Oxfordshire County Council to Banbury railway station. He claims the upgrades disproportionately prioritize cyclists while neglecting the needs of elderly people, disabled individuals, and mothers with young children.
The councillor described the project as turning into a "multi-million white elephant scheme," suggesting that the funds were poorly spent and the plans lacked proper consideration for all users. He stressed the importance of making public transport accessible and convenient for every passenger, not just cyclists.
According to the councillor, the improvements heavily favor cycling infrastructure but fail to provide adequate facilities or empathy for those who face greater challenges in mobility, such as the elderly or disabled. He implied that the council did not consult broadly enough or anticipate the diverse needs of station users.
"This is now a multi-million white elephant scheme,"
highlighting the mismatch between investment and practical benefit to the wider community.
The Banbury railway station upgrades show a misplaced focus on cycling, resulting in overlooked accessibility needs for vulnerable groups, which fuels local discontent with the council's approach.
