Germany has pledged €160 million in financial support for the Saidabad Water Treatment Plant project in Dhaka, aiming to improve the city’s water supply network and ensure better access to clean water for millions of residents.
The financing includes both new allocations and amendments to an existing loan agreement between Germany and the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa). The funds will be used to modernize the intake system for raw water, upgrade major pipelines, and strengthen the city’s distribution network to enhance efficiency and reliability.
The project forms part of a broader cooperation framework between Germany and Bangladesh in environmental sustainability and urban development. The financial package will also support technological upgrades to reduce water loss, improve quality monitoring, and ensure compliance with international water safety standards.
Once completed, the Saidabad plant upgrades are expected to expand its treatment capacity, providing safe drinking water to a growing urban population and reducing dependence on groundwater resources. German funding further reinforces the country’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 — clean water and sanitation for all.
“This partnership symbolizes a shared vision for sustainable urban growth and environmental resilience,” said an official involved in the project.
